A Kimberley Story That Speaks to Everyone

This story belongs to the Bunuba people of the Kimberley. But it speaks to everyone.

Growing up just as the first pastoralists were cutting a swathe through his native lands, Jandamarra is one of Australia’s great tragic heroes. Station child, angry young man, police tracker of his own people and finally inspirational leader of the most successful Indigenous resistance against white settlement, his life was lived on the jagged edge of change and uncertainty.

This epic and passionate production by Black Swan Theatre Company, with Bunuba Films and the Perth International Arts Festival, brings this important and moving story to Perth audiences in three languages. Playwright and long-term Kimberley identity Steve Hawke has worked with Bunuba and Kriol translators on a script whose epic sweep and startling images will stay in your memory.

"Tell him to let all the station mob know, all the police mob, everybody. Tell 'em this word. We're taking our country back now." Jandamarra

Production in Bunuba, English and Kriol with English surtitles.

A Perth International Arts Festival event.
