Black Swan Theatre Company is Western Australia’s State Flagship Theatre Company. Since its inception in 1991, it has earned both critical and popular acclaim for its world premiere productions and highly distinctive (re)interpretations of international theatre classics – all of which are infused with a distinctively Western Australian flavour.
These have included such landmark productions as Bran Nue Dae, Sistergirl, Corrugation Road, The Merry-Go-Round in the Sea, Cloudstreet (Perth, Sydney, London and Dublin seasons) and Reg Cribb’s adaptation of Uncle Vanya.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Tom Gutteridge, Black Swan has maintained a strong commitment to commissioning new work and in recent years has premiered exciting new plays such as Ian Wilding’s The Carnivores and Neil Gladwin’s Red Dog. Black Swan Theatre Company is the designated Resident Company for Perth’s New Performing Arts Venue, to be completed in 2010.
In 2008, Black Swan Theatre Company will present seven mainhouse and two HotBed Ensemble productions: Jandamarra by Steve Hawke, as part of the UWA Perth International Arts Festival; the classic of American theatre, Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Joanna Murray-Smith’s feminist comedy The Female of the Species; The Pitch, a one-man show written and performed by Peter Houghton; Far Away, by UK playwright Caryl Churchill; Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac, in an adaptation by Andrew Upton; Roy Smiles’ Ying Tong – A Walk with the Goons. The HotBed Ensemble, Black Swan Theatre’s emerging artist development program, will present Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle and the world premiere of Portraits of Modern Evil by Robert Reid.
