Information for Actors and Other Artists
Black Swan is engaged with the theatre communities of Western Australia and beyond. We welcome theatre artists who come to Perth and we maintain programs to provide access and support for local performers and others.
Actors
General Auditions
Black Swan runs General Auditions usually twice a year. These are open auditions for actors who have completed training, are new to Perth or are working in local ‘fringe’ theatre; and who feel ready to take on the main stage at WA’s State Flagship Theatre Company.
If this is you, then send a photo and CV via email or post expressing your interest in General Auditions to:
Pippa Davis
Artistic Coordinator
Black Swan Theatre Company
PO Box 3232, Broadway PO
Crawley WA 6009
Email: pippad@bstc.com.au
You can do this at any time and you will receive an acknowledgement of receipt confirming you are now on our list. When we organize our next round of General Auditions and have a place for you, you will receive notification of your time slot. Please prepare an audition piece of a maximum of 5 minutes.
The HotBed Ensemble: Black Swan’s Emerging Artist Development Program
In 2006 Black Swan initiated a new program to help develop the careers of emerging artists in Perth. The program provides skills development, production experience and opportunities for creative interaction with other talented emerging artists and with the artistic staff of Black Swan. The HotBed is open to actors, directors and designers (lighting, set, costume, sound, multimedia, etc) who are selected via audition or interview for an eight-month program. For more details click here. For application advice please contact information@bstc.com.au.
Writers
Black Swan does accept unsolicited scripts i.e. scripts sent by their authors with no previous contact with our company, however because of very limited resources we are unable to promise a response. Although we endeavour to read everything that is sent, this is not always possible. We suggest that you initially send a synopsis and description of the work rather than a full script. This way we can let you know if your play is clearly not for us. You will generally receive a response to such an approach within a couple of weeks. If we do ask you to send your script and we DO respond it will often be after 3 or 4 months.
Playwrights living in WA are encouraged to send their scripts to Stages, (the WA Playwrights’ Consortium) and those living elsewhere in Australia to the Australian Writers Guild for a professional assessment before approaching Black Swan (please note you will need to join the Guild to get an assessment). We are more likely to read plays endorsed by these organizations.
Directors, Designers and Others
Please get in touch if you move to Perth. Black Swan is always keen to find new and talented individuals for our work. If you are in the first five years of your career or have recently completed a professional theatre training course then you might be interested in our HotBed Emerging Artists Program.
